ife's Door volunteers undergo a comprehensive training program to develop and enhance skills in supporting and communicating with patients and their families in the terminal stages of disease.

Volunteers thereby become comfortable with issues such as the physical, social and psychological aspects of disease, spiritual care, and tools to assist the dying.
A natural outgrowth is the building of the volunteer's self awareness regarding issues of disease, loss and the bereavement process. Volunteers are supervised in both group and individual formats. Volunteers assist in accessing community and professional resources that ease the end of life process. Professional intervention is offered to patients and families when needed.
